What it is
STLCC is a nonprofit bricks-and-mortar club in St. Louis, but its online footprint is enormous: a YouTube channel with thousands of free grandmaster lectures, opening and endgame lessons, and live broadcasts (Sinquefield Cup, U.S. Championships). The online educational content is entirely free and needs no membership. The in-person club, classes, and private lessons are paid and geographically local to Missouri.
Review
The Saint Louis Chess Club is the best free chess school nobody enrolls in. Its YouTube archive - thousands of grandmaster lectures plus broadcast-quality coverage of the Sinquefield Cup and U.S. Championships - is a genuinely world-class education that costs nothing and asks nothing in return.
The honest caveat: as an online "club," it isn't one. There's no membership, no community chat, no place to log in and belong - the social club is physical and lives in Missouri. What you get online is a library, and a superb one. Use it as the lecture hall behind whatever structured routine you run elsewhere, whether that's Chess Dojo or a course platform like ChessMood.
What works
- A free, deep archive of titled-player instruction with unmatched production quality.
- Lectures span true beginners to elite-level analysis - one channel covers every rating band.
- Live broadcasts are a real-time window into top-level chess, narrated by strong commentators.
What doesn't
- Not a true joinable online community - it's a broadcast and a library, with no membership or chat layer online.
- The actual club and its perks are geographically gated to St. Louis.
- The content is a firehose with weak beginner pathing - you have to build your own curriculum from it.
